Depression is a terribly debilitating illness, putting the sufferer on an endless merry go round of doctors and treatments and pharmaceuticals. But there is now some evidence that Omega 3 cures depression, or at least that there is a strong link between Omega 3 and depression relief.

In the 1990s researchers started to discover a pattern. Societies that had higher rates of seafood intake had lower rates of depression and vice versa. Higher intake of seafood means a higher intake of Omega 3 fats.

And following that various studies were undertaken that have now confirmed a strong link between higher Omega 3 intake and lower depression. Of course there is always more to be studied, but to date results are very encouraging.

There is much work to be done. There are all sorts of questions that need to be investigated. What is the relationship between Omega 3 and 6 intake as it relates to depression? How much of these good fats should we include in our diet? What happens if we increase our intake if we are already taking more traditional pharmaceutical anti depressants?

But it is still under study, there is good news for those currently suffering from depression. They will know all about the negative side effects of taking the various pharmaceuticals prescribed as anti depressants. But there are no known negative side effects from increasing the levels of Omega 3 in the diet, and many positive health benefits in general.

There is indeed strong evidence that taking daily Omega 3 supplements is extremely positive for many areas of the health, and this is supported by the American Heart Association. They recommend minimum levels of Omega 3 intake as fish in the diet or as supplements.

There is strong evidence showing a wide range of heart health benefits from taking fish oil through increasing the amount of fish in the diet or by fish oil supplements. To date there are no credible reports of negative side effects from increasing the intake of fish oil, only positive health benefits.

There is one issue though. It is now clear that the fish in our oceans are contaminated to some degree by various toxins like PCBs, heavy metals and mercury and recommendations are that some fish should not be eaten too often for this reason.

But there is more good news. The manufacturer of the worlds best fish oil supplements puts their fish oil through a rigorous decontamination process so that levels of any contaminants are so low that they cannot be detected. So we can take our Omega 3 daily.

So whilst science hasn’t yet fully proven that Omega 3 cures depression there are strong health reasons to add daily Omega 3 supplementation to your diet. You’ll be healthier generally and the Omega 3 capsules may even cure, or help, your depression.
